The "Easter Suite" has remained one of Oscar Peterson's least known compositions, although it is mentioned in almost all sources as one of his major works. It was commissioned by the South Bank Show, London's flagship arts programme for weekend television, and was broadcast nationally on Good Friday, 24 April 1984. Its 9 movements follow the events depicted in the Gospel from the Last Supper to the Resurrection. This recording of the premiere also contains an interview with Peterson in which he explains how he came to compose the suite, describes his initial scepticism about the interpretation of such a theme in jazz and explains his relationship to sacred music. He also describes the various motifs of the work in detail. Even if the Passion and the Resurrection seem surprising as themes for a longer jazz work, Oscar Peterson's "Easter Suite" stands in a long line of other jazz greats who created religiously inspired works, at least in their later work.
